Summary: Our self storage client's competitor ranked well for a car size blog post, prompting Hurrdat to create a competitive post that saw a 72% increase in impressions, 118% increase in clicks, 147% increase in top keywords, and 217% more SERP features. Explore our expert SEO and content marketing strategies for the blog post below.

Challenge: Content Gap Covered by High-Ranking Competitor Blog

One of our client’s competitors ranked well and generated keywords and traffic for a blog post about average car size dimensions. Because our client offers vehicle storage but had not already written content about vehicle sizes, Hurrdat saw this as an opportunity to compete against a post within our client’s topical authority.

Solution: Strategized & Wrote Competing Blog Post

Our SEO and content teams conducted a thorough competitor gap analysis, reviewed keyword opportunities, and crafted a content strategy based on those findings. Primarily, we saw these opportunities to outrank the competitor post:

  • Compare vehicle car sizes (e.g., standard vs. mid-size vs. full-size). Competitor did not rank well for these search terms.
  • Use high-volume search terms (e.g., remove “sports cars,” “luxury cars,” and “station wagons” when “mid-size vehicle sizes” and “full-size car sizes” were the terms people used to search).
  • Prioritize rich content and tables based on keyword research (e.g., “car size chart” and “vehicle size comparison”) for better user experience and SERP visibility.
  • Relate the post back to self storage by recommending storage unit sizes for different car sizes to increase conversions and make relevant to our client’s authority.

Results: Significant Increase in SERP Rankings & Features

One month after publishing the car vehicle size guide, search visibility and engagement rose steadily—with impressions increasing 72% and clicks increasing 118%.

We also tracked performance for target keywords (positions 1-3) and SERP features after launch. Here’s how rankings increased month-over-month:

  • Position 1-3 Keywords: +147%
  • SERP Features: +217%

In month three, the post outranked our client’s competitor for top target keywords in organic search, and continued to capture AI Overviews. The rich content visuals have also earned featured snippets and are likely the reason for the large increase in SERP features.
